Chapter 1: Return

The beeping in his ear warned of an impending call to his encrypted private number from an unrecognized ID. Weird. Very few people had his private number, and he wasn’t expecting a call from any of them. Besides, if it’d been one of his contacts, it would have announced the name. Setting the precious piece of equipment he’d been cleaning back on the shop’s shelf, he gave only a brief second thought to accepting the call, but curiosity got the better of him. He tapped the spot behind his ear to accept it.

“How ya get this number?” was his sole greeting.

“Ya gave it t’me,” the voice that came through was familiar.

“Well, I’ll be damned!” Lee’s lips spread into a cheery grin. “If it ain’t my best runner! Oren! Where the fuck you been, man? I almost believed you were dead!”

On the other end, Oren chuckled. “Sorry, lots been goin’ on.”

“I’ll say.” Lee snorted, giving a brief, tender look towards Song. His rainbow-haired lover was none the wiser to the call, manning the pawn shop’s desk for him. Song seemed to struggle a bit, pursing his lips and shifting his weight, patience always short when customers were being overly picky. Lee briefly wondered if he should come to his aid, but remembered last time Song had been pissed about it, too. After all, he had asked to take on the job to ‘polish his skills’ with customers. With a fond smile and a shake of his head, he turned his gaze back and resumed cleaning the shelves. “You owe me an explanation.”

“I do,” Oren said, “Ya mind if I drop by after hours? I kinda wanna see if ya can help me with somethin’ too.”

“Sure, if you got the money for it,” Lee half-joked. He gave a brief pause, then added, “You’re not bringin’ troubles my way, are ya?”

“No no, none o’that.”

Lee chuckled. “Alright, then we’re good. Drop by whenever you want, Oren.” He cut the call, lifting his gaze in time to see the client walk out of the shop, a rather unhappy set to his face, but carrying a bag.

“You look happy.” Song’s melodious voice came from the side.

Lee again abandoned his task to turn to him instead, leaning down for a soft kiss. “Old friend called. He’s dropping by later. Did you make the sale?”
