Chapter 1: Neon Nightmares

“Morning!” Lee called as he entered the changing rooms, putting on his best smile. It was a relatively small room. Lockers lined the left and right walls, a set of long benches running down the middle. There were three men there already, in various stages of changing. A couple looked up and greeted him back, while the third called a ‘morning’ without bothering to lift his head.

“You’re late, you know?” his partner said. He was just zipping up his dark gray jumper.

Lee looked across the room. Right over the exit door was a digital panel with information about the day, weather, conditions outside, and more. His gaze fixed on the time display.

“Only five minutes,” he went to his locker and used his thumb print to open it. He kicked off his shoes and slipped off his clothes until he was wearing only underwear and a tank top, hanging the rest of his garments in the locker and pulling out his own gray jumper, a thick, rugged piece of clothing meant to protect him from the cold and conditions outside. He slipped it on and carefully zipped it up, pausing at the top to flip up the collar, and finish zipping it all the way.

“That’s five more minutes we’ll have to spend out there,” his partner complained, getting up. The other two men gave some generic greetings and left through that second door, labeled “Exit.”

Lee watched them go from the corner of his eye.

“It’s not like it’s overtime,” he remarked, rolling his eyes. “We’ll still be out there our usual hours.” He sat on the bench, putting away his day shoes and taking some heavy duty boots from the locker instead. He slipped them on, making sure his pant legs were inside the boots, and pressed the side to secure them. “Besides, you’ve only just finished changing too.”

“Just hurry up.” His partner said, huffing as he got up and left through the same door the other two men had.

Lee shook his head. He stood, securing a wrist tablet over his jumper, turning it on to double check it was working fine. With that done, he finally reached for the last pieces of safety gear: a pair of gloves and a helmet. He pocketed the gloves in a spot designed for such purpose, dusted off the Solara logo over his heart, and held the helmet under an arm as he followed everyone else.
